As a writer myself, I’m not against the use of AI for content production. Sure, AI tools often struggle with hallucination, and they have developed a certain robotic writing style that people can easily notice these days.
While AI won’t be able to replace the nuance and creativity of human-written content (yet), these tools can still be great sparring partners. You can use AI to conduct research, create outlines and drafts, and brainstorm ideas when you’re stuck.
Over the last few years, I’ve used a number of AI tools to help with my writing process. Based on my personal experience, as well as experiments with other AI models I haven’t used before, I’ve compiled a list of the 11 best AI writing tools in 2025.
How we evaluate the best AI writing tools
I signed up to more than a dozen AI writing tools, generated various types of content with each app, and then used the following criteria to measure their value:
- Output quality. It's true that AI content still can't replicate human writing. So what I was really looking for were AI tools that could produce natural, engaging content that doesn't immediately scream "a robot wrote this." These tools also have to be able to match the tone, style, and language of your brand voice.
- Learning capabilities. I didn't want an app that simply gave me a content draft based on my prompt. I wanted an AI assistant that has the ability to pick up my writing style and generate better output over time.
- Value for money. If it’s a paid tool, is it really worth your money considering the features and output quality given?
With all those factors in mind, here are my favorite AI writing tools.
Quick overview of the best AI writing software
The best free AI writing tools
Claude AI

Claude AI isn’t a dedicated AI writing tool. But the quality of its output is so good that I can’t help but include Claude AI in this list. Whether you're drafting a blog post, refining email copy, or working on a brand voice guideline, Claude is able to produce content that feels conversational and natural.
You won’t see those telltale signs of AI content, like repetitive phrasing, awkward transitions, or that overly formal tone that makes everything sound like a corporate press release. Claude also excels at maintaining your intended tone throughout longer pieces, which is where a lot of other AI tools start to fall apart.
And you don’t have to worry about committing any copyright infringement, too. Claude is designed to avoid plagiarism and ensure originality in your work. Plus, it can access the latest information from the web, which is really helpful for research and fact-checking.
Pricing: Free with a daily message limit; Individual plans cost $17/month (billed annually) – $100/month (billed monthly); Team plans cost $30/month/user (5 users minimum)
Pros:
- Able to produce natural and “human-sounding” output
- Puts strong emphasis on ethical content generation
- Can mimic your tone of voice, whether you want to write a serious corporate document or a playful social media post
Cons:
- Doesn’t clearly tell the exact number of messages you can send per day
- No image generation feature
ChatGPT

I’m pretty sure you’ve used ChatGPT at some point. Maybe you're still using it now. It’s the first (and still the most popular) tool that exposes people to a large language model (LLM) that could understand context and generate human-like responses.
What made ChatGPT so groundbreaking was how easy it is to use. Whether you need a 3,000-word blog post or a 100-word ad copy, you just need to enter a prompt, and within seconds, it will come back with a draft.
You can tell the AI chatbot to “write in a friendly tone,” or “make it sound more confident,” and it will adjust the entire piece to fit. It can switch from academic to casual, persuasive to poetic, light-hearted to formal — all based on just a few words of instruction.
If the standard version won’t cut it, ChatGPT offers chatbots dedicated to writing, like:
- AI Humanizer for making your content sound like it’s written by a living flesh.
- Grammar Checker for finding and fixing any grammatical mistakes and typos.
- Copywriter GPT for marketing, branding, and anything in between.
Also, unlike Claude, ChatGPT allows you to generate images, even in the free version. So, you won’t have to browse hundreds of stock photos to find the right ones for your content.
With that being said, I feel that ChatGPT isn’t suited for long-form content. It struggles with repetition. If you've ever asked it to write long articles, you might notice that it sometimes circles back to the same phrases or reintroduces an idea as if it's new.
Pricing: Free with limited access to GPT-4o; Personal plans cost $20/month – $200/month; Business plan costs $25/month
Pros:
- Offers dedicated GPTs for writing
- Allows you to generate images in the free version
- Enables you to create videos from text with Sora
Cons:
- Often struggles with repetition when generating long content
- Frequent app crashes
Free AI Writing tools by Ahrefs

You must be familiar with Ahrefs as an (mostly) SEO platform. But it does have a suite of free AI tools for marketing content creation. However, unlike Claude AI and ChatGPT, Ahrefs’ AI assistant doesn’t generate a piece of content from scratch. Instead, you can use it more as a brainstorming partner to:
- Generate blog post ideas
- Create article outlines
- Find acronyms
- Rewrite sentences
- Check for grammatical errors
- Humanize your AI content
So you would have to generate your blog post using other AI tools first. Only then can you use Ahrefs AI Writing tools to refine it. Besides SEO content, Ahrefs also offers AI tools for generating social media captions, hashtags, and video scripts, as well as Google Ads campaigns, product descriptions, and landing page copy.
Pricing: Free
Pros:
- Completely free to use
- You don’t need to create an account
- Offers a wide range of AI writing tools for marketing content
Cons:
- Doesn’t provide the option to generate a long blog post from scratch
The best AI writing tools for SEO content
Writesonic

Writesonic uses ChatGPT to power its generative AI services. But it combines the LLM with on-page SEO tools, and creates a new product called AI Article Writer to help you write blog posts that rank on Google.
The AI Article Writer analyzes top-ranking articles in your niche to understand their keywords and structure, before generating a search-optimized piece of content based on your topic.
You can also use its SEO tools separately to conduct keyword research, competitor analysis, and technical site audits. Although they don’t come close to the capabilities of full-fledged SEO platforms like Ahfrefs or Semrush.
My only concern is the pricing structure, which is a bit complex. There are simply too many plans to choose from, each one comes with its own AI Article Writer model that produces different levels of output quality.
But if you’re not ready to invest in the paid plans yet, don’t worry. You can use Writesonic’s free AI writing tools like LinkedIn Carousel Generator, Outline Generator, AI Text Humanizer, and Paraphrasing Tool.
Pricing: $20/month – $499/month
Pros:
- Pretty powerful built-in SEO tools
- Can generate up to 5,000-word articles
- Offers a fact checker to ensure content credibility
Cons:
- Not available in many countries outside the US and Europe
- The basic plan isn’t really worth your money
SEOwind

If you're a serious SEO specialist or content writer, you should give SEOwind a try. It’s a bit more expensive than Writesonic, but its deep SERP analysis and content intelligence features certainly make up for it.
Simply enter the keyword you want to rank for, and the AI Research Agent will look at the competing articles and analyze their outline, keywords used, and word count. Based on the analysis, it will create a content brief that makes sense.
After that, you can either pass the brief to your content team, or ask the AI tool to write the article for you. The output is pretty good—it sounds natural while, at the same time, hitting all the SEO marks.
You can add your brand voice, so the generated content will match your company's tone and style perfectly. If you want the AI tool to automatically include relevant internal links, you can also connect your Google Search Console (GSC) account.
Pricing: $59/month – $359/month
Pros:
- Gives you in-depth SERP and competitor analysis
- Great content output that sounds like real human
- Google Search Console integration for internal linking
Cons:
- Free trial only lasts 3 days
- You can’t generate an article without adding a payment method first
Surfer AI

Surfer AI is more of a content optimization platform rather than an AI writing tool. Still, you can use it to generate decent articles in just a few steps—enter your keyword, set the tone of voice, review the outline, and let AI do the rest.
Not sure what to write? Use its Topical Maps to identify content gaps among top-ranked blog posts, and find new topic ideas to cover.
But Surfer's true strength lies in its Content Editor. It gives you live feedback on keyword density, content structure, and readability while you're writing. You'll see exactly how your content stacks up against top-ranking competitors, with suggestions on what to add or remove.
If you want to target an international audience, you can also generate articles in different languages. Surfer supports English, German, Dutch, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and more.
Pricing is the only drawback. For $99/month, you can only generate five AI articles per month, which in today’s standard, simply isn’t enough.
Pricing: $99/month – $219/month
Pros:
- Powerful content optimization features
- Supports articles in 11 languages
- Offers a content gap analysis feature
Cons:
- Pretty expensive for the amount of articles you can generate per month
The best AI writing tools for marketing copy
Jasper

You know what's frustrating about most AI writing tools? They make everything sound like it was written by the same robot having a particularly bland day.
Jasper's Brand Voice feature basically fixes this by studying how you actually write and then copying your style. Give it some of your best content, and it will pick up on whether you're the type who's "knowledgeable and slightly serious" or more of a "warm and conversational" brand.
You can also feed Jasper documents about your company and products. By doing so, you ensure it won’t make up stuff about your brand whenever it’s writing an Instagram caption, ad copy, or email newsletter.
Look, at $49-69 a month, Jasper isn't cheap. But if you're running a business where brand consistency actually matters—where every headline, social post, and ad needs to sound like you while getting the details right—it's worth the investment.
Pricing: $49/month/seat – $69/month/seat
Pros:
- 90+ apps for landing pages, social media posts, email sequences, and more
- Offers a browser extension to access Jasper on any app you use
- Integrates nicely with Google Docs, Grammarly, WordPress, and more
Cons:
- Struggles with repetition for long-form content
- The output still requires human editing and fact checking
Anyword

If you want to generate marketing copy that actually converts, Anyword is a great choice. It’s an AI writing assistant for business owners and performance marketers looking to craft ad headlines, social posts, and marketing emails without hiring a copywriter.
Unlike most AI tools in this list, this one actually allows you to mimic the tone of voice of some of the world’s leading brands. For example, you can be an Entertainer like Duolingo that makes people smile with funny campaigns. Or you can be an Advisor like J.P Morgan that speaks like a true expert in a more formal tone.
Another feature I really like is the suggested target audience. The tool scans your brief and recommends the most suitable group of people you should target. You can add your own target market with its own pain points and needs as well.
Anyword also analyzes your copy against performance data from similar campaigns and provides a conversion probability score. In other words, you can test different copy variations and see which one is most likely to resonate with your specific audience.
Pricing: $49/month – $499/month
Pros:
- Offers tone of voice presets inspired by leading brands
- Gives you performance predictions backed by real data
- Supports content in 30+ languages
Cons:
- No free plan
- Can be really expensive if you have more than 3 team members
Copy.ai

Copy.ai uses different LLMs, including ChatGPT-3 and Claude 3 Haiku (for free users), as well as ChatGPT-4o and Claude 3 Opus (for pro users) to power its AI chatbot. So, the quality of the output you'll get will depend on the exact AI model you use.
But content generation isn't the real reason why I put Copy.ai in this list. In fact, I think the output is quite poor compared to other AI assistants we've explored so far. Instead, it's the fact that Copy.ai offers an automation feature to streamline your business flow.
You can automate your entire content creation process, from researching the web and pulling data from LinkedIn to actually generating the text. This tool also has pre-built workflow templates, so you won't have to start from scratch.
Another thing I find particularly useful is how Copy.ai learns your brand voice over time, and applies it consistently whether you're writing social posts, email campaigns, or sales copy.
Pricing: Free for up to 2,000 words in Chat; paid plans cost $49/month – $249/month
Pros:
- Supports the latest LLMs like GPT-4o and Claude 3
- Offers workflow automation for repetitive tasks
- Allows you to integrate data from multiple sources
Cons:
- The AI-generated content sounds robotic
- You can only generate 2,000 words in the free version
The best AI writing tool for social media
Buffer’s AI Assistant

You can use any AI tools to generate social media captions or video scripts. But with Buffer’s AI Assistant, you’ll also get other handy features to manage your social media marketing campaigns.
For instance, after you generate a social media post, Buffer’s AI Assistant will then adapt it for different platforms simultaneously. It can also suggest the best time to post based on when your audience is most active. So you can reach as many people as possible and increase your content engagement.
When all is said and done, you can track your content performance from one dashboard. And it doesn't stop there. The AI assistant will learn from your top-performing posts to suggest ideas for future campaigns.
Pricing: Free to connect up to 3 social media channels; paid plans cost $6/month – $12/month
Pros:
- The most affordable tool in this list
- Comes with smart content repurposing
- Integrated into Buffer's main dashboard
Cons:
- Not suitable if you're looking for a standalone AI writing tool
The best AI writing tool for fiction
Sudowrite

Sudowrite is the only AI writing tool designed for fiction writers. So if you hit a roadblock while writing your novel, it can be a great tool to help you move forward. You can simply import your unfinished work, and let AI generate several story continuation alternatives based on your existing text.
The Describe feature brings your sentences to life with metaphors and sensory details, such as what the characters see, hear, smell, taste, and feel. If you’re still not sure about character development, plot points, and dialogues, there’s also a Brainstorm feature to help you come up with ideas.
While it’s true that you can’t rely 100% on Sudowrite to write your entire story, it’s still a great tool for your creative process whenever you get stuck.
Pricing: $19/month – $59/month
Pros:
- Great option for novel authors and book writers
- Pretty straightforward and easy-to-use interface
- Unique ability to develop a fictional world with its own characters, plot points, and dialogues
Cons:
- Works best for fiction writing as opposed to business writing
Other tools to improve your writing
Let’s take a look at some other apps that aren’t exactly AI writing tools, but offer functions that make your writing process a lot easier:
- Grammarly for checking and fixing typos, grammatical errors, and sentence structures that don’t make sense. It works with any AI writing tool you use.
- Hemingway Editor for making your content easier to read, even for 8th graders. It scans your text to find overly complicated sentences. And then offers suggestions to improve them.
- Notion for quickly jotting down ideas whenever and wherever you are. It also has an AI assistant for researching, brainstorming ideas, and even generating text.
- Speechify for reading your text out loud, so you can easily spot spelling mistakes and sentences that don’t flow well in your content.
